But, Why Challenges?
The Problem
- Our platform analysis revealed that game engagement was below expectations.
- Through deeper qualitative research, one of our findings was the lack of competitiveness in our games.
- Seeing this as an opportunity, we set out to design an experience that would use competitiveness to enhance our gameplay experience & improve engagement.
Our Approach

- We explored two options to introduce competitiveness: Synchronous PvP (Player vs. Player) or Asynchronous tournaments (players competing against a set score).
- After several brainstorming sessions and secondary research, we chose the Asynchronous tournament approach because:
- Most of our games were score-based.
- Our games didn’t support synchronous PvP, and developing it wasn’t feasible at the moment.
- Thus, we launched Challenges, a user-generated tournament format where players compete to beat a high score within 24 hours.
